TULSA — Changing schools can be tough for any child, but moving from a small town in the north of England to Tulsa, OK, was especially hard on the 9-year-old Ian Hughes.
The English are famed for their dry wit. When asked if her heritage fits well into Oklahoma’s culture, English-born Tulsan Jean Conway answered, “What culture?” She’s just as irreverent about England, which she left in 1955 to marry an American against the wishes of her parents.
The English Cattle Ranch and Land Company sent British immigrants to run and work on ranches they established on leased Indian reservation land in the 1880s. A number of English natives and their descendants took part in the land runs.
