Rural hospitals and cancer
LAWTON — Rural cancer patients often face life-threatening hurdles in their quest for treatment.
Reach to Recovery
Genevieve Burns was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago. Today, the 79-year-old Warr Acres resident is a volunteer with Reach to Recovery, a program organized by the American Cancer Society, which matches breast cancer survivors with patients undergoing treatment for that disease.
Religion and faith
TULSA — At 39, Lyn Thompson was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. A tumor three quarters the size of her breast threatened to divide the Tulsan from everything and everyone she held dear.
The devastating diagnosis came just three years after the tragic death of her husband in a car accident. Thompson said she was left to raise four young daughters alone and the cancer diagnosis meant the possibility of leaving her children orphans. To combat the cancer, the young widow had a double mastectomy and went through six months of chemotherapy. Thompson, now 60, said her faith helped sustain her throughout the ordeal. Spirituality, she said, can play a significant role in battling cancer.Support groups
